This year has been an amazing summer so far. Taking a few years off has taught me to be less hard on myself and learn to accept my own limitations. As I move forward I am using the things I learned while working off the farm to decide what I want to do moving forward.
Looking at how I spend my time, and how I want to spend my time is a good start. I love working in the greenhouse and growing fresh greens mean I can have a fresh consistant product for most of the year. I just ordered some new irrigation equipment, so, of course, we got some rain. But I would like to still get it set up in the field so it will be ready when I need it. I also bought all the Rubbermaid tubs in Goderich Canadian Tire and Walmart; allowing me to pack the greens as needed at market which make them look better, save me time on the farm, allocate greens better and save time (and materials) unbagging unsold produce.
Another big time saver and relief is that my puppy’s leg has healed. He has been confined to a crate for 2 months. Yesterday I saw him sit calmly in my carport and watch some birds fly by. Seeing him outside, without having to fight him and get a bag on his bandage brought me so much joy. Knowing that he will no longer be chewing on his cone or bandage means I will sleep better . Plus, hopefully, I can avoid too many more surprise visits to the vet office which have been frequent this year.
Settling in on the farm has allowed me to breath a little easier. Having a home and permanent garden plots set aside mean I can focus on more long term goals, establish more perennial plants, and focus on improving the farm as both a business and a home.
