Starting a Routine

Now that the farmers' markets have really started, it is easier to have a routine on the farm. The beginning of the season comes with a lot of changes and every day can look very different. Now that we have days to work towards it means we have a rhythm start on the farm. Harvest days, sales days, and then we fit in the weeding, planting, and everything else in between. I would love to have a perfect routine involving planting days and weeding days, but the unpredictable element of weather has always made that unfeasible. Over the years it has been one of the main factors that has made it harder for me to manage employees. What do I do if there is a thunderstorm, heat warning, or if the ground is too wet for me to go out in the field? Diversifying the farm makes it easier to find work in all weather conditions (in addition to making my springs more fun). Sometimes you just have to work through the weather conditions (rainy harvest days aren't quite as much fun, but necessary). And sometimes I just have to admit I won't be able to accomplish what I want to that day. I love (almost) every aspect of working on a farm, so long as I don't get stressed out about it. So it isn't hard to find another job to do, but sometimes I miss when I was a teenager and could just use a rainy day as an excuse to take the day off.
