And sometimes instead of spending your Monday afternoon seeding your field crops, you have to spend it trying to cut irrigation lines out of your rototiller. Even after an hour I was still stuck. That was the end of my Monday plans. Luckily it was old irrigation line that I was on the fence about even using. However, since farming is so time sensitive, having to clean up the rototiller is a good reminder to step back, take some time and that not everything can be done on schedule.
On the bright side, I am into my plantings where I have adjusted my seeding rate, meaning I have better availability of radishes, spinach, and baby kale. My weekly plantings have been happening, even if not always on schedule. The tight management of my weekly lettuces and greens, should help reduce the weed pressure in the field, opening up the farm to easier growing of additional crops in the future like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, beets, and maybe even the elusive carrot (with the 14 day germination period that makes it so hard). Plus I have been very good at adding organic mushroom compost to the fields before each planting, I can see the difference it makes in the crops. I've been snapping pictures of the fields as reminders to myself of what I am capable of and even if some things don't work out, some things are going quite well.
